The below is a guide only, the road legal option is not currently available.
Here is a guide for UK customers who want to know the basics of designing road legal number plates.
When designing replacement number plates, you need to select the ‘Road Legal’ option as the Plate Type. This option then restricts all the design options which are illegal to use on the UK Highway.
Below you will find a step-by-step instructional video you can follow in order to create your replacement number plate, using our plate maker above.
This is the first box you see on the number plate builder. The characters you type here will generate the preview on your plate builder. Spacing your characters is the first major point in designing legal style number plates. All UK format registrations have one space which separates the two groups of characters/numbers.
UK Current Style – AN99 GEL
As you can see, this example registration has one space after the year identifier which is ‘99’. Only 1 space is permitted and only between the characters ‘9’ and ‘G’.
UK Prefix Style – Q1 QQQ
We have used the letter ‘Q’ here as an example (although this is not a letter included in this format of registrations unless specifically allocated for other reasons). As you can see, after the ‘1’ is a space which separates the two character groups.
Suffix Style – QQQ 1Q
Suffix combinations can be taken as a reverse format of the prefix. In this case, the initial letters are first, then a space is between the letter and the next available number. In this case, the space is between the last ‘Q’ and the number ‘1’
The most common size is the Standard Oblong, but there are other sizes that can be chosen depending on your vehicle type.
NOTE: THE SHORT OBLONG PLATE SIZE IS IDEAL FOR 6 CHARACTER NUMBERS OR BELOW. This is due to the shrinking of text size if anymore are characters are typed. This of course, does not apply if your designing show plates or signs for other purposes.
An important choice when it comes to designing replacement number plates. The top first 4 font styles are the only legal UK style fonts. These are the Standard, Standard 3D, Standard Hi-Line and Standard Carbon. The colour permitted is BLACK only. Drop Shadows cannot be added.
PLEASE NOTE: Any other font choice other than the first 4 fonts are to be used for show plates and sign plates only. The colour cannot be changed for the fonts to any other apart from Black itself, unless your designing plates for show or sign use. Finally, drop shadows cannot be selected, unless you are designing plates strictly for show or sign use.
The only legal style group of badges are the ‘European Identifiers’ group. These must be selected in the colour Blue and can only be selected for the left side of the plates. Any other badge groups, or badges on the right are for signs and show plates.
You can add any border style or colour. A good point to note is that certain border colours tend to appear darker on yellow plates due to prints on transparencies mixing in with the yellow reflective surface of the plate.
Slogans are for show plates and sign plates only, such as extra text for parking signs.
Backgrounds are for show and sign use only.
